KHM: A Statement on AI

Artificial intelligence (or AI) has been a controversial topic in recent years. The technology has significant ramifications, both positive and negative, which have been a hotbed of discussion. At KHM, we value human-made art. Whether it be an image, a short film, a published story or an audio production. We are aware of the concerns and, frankly; we agree.
Our previous statement on AI was insufficient. Previously, we saw no concern over using AI as a tool to help us bring our projects to life.
However, upon educating ourselves on the technology, the process of how it works, and the increasing levels of ethical and moral questions that are yet to be addressed. We have realised that there is a dark, disturbing, and sinister downside that has thrown our original "on the fence" opinion into question.
Considering recent events such as the hack on the company Hugging Face, one of Anthropic's researchers revealling that the technology could result in an extinction event, and controversy surrounding a Doctor Who fan film published by the YouTube channel The Unmade Season. As well as the technology being used to resurrect dead actors/performers. It has been clearly apparent that the technology and those who currently develop it.
That the developers do not know what they're doing and thus are complicit in the technology posing as a serious threat, as well as "creators" who are using the technology to spread misinformation, create racist, abusive and illegally exploitative content and plagiarize other people's work.
As a company, we had used the technology to proofread, analyse and check for any spelling or punctuation mistakes (a recent example being Robbie Fleming's Order Up series).
We had tested the use of "art" but have decided that was a step too far, and thus we took steps to remove any AI imagery from our site. Any project currently in development will be reviewed, and any AI input will be removed before we release any new productions.
Transparency, accountability, and awareness of the growing seriousness AI poses are all values we hold at KHM.
I believe that given our values stated above; the time has come to acknowledge our part in the ongoing situation, re-evaluate our position, and take the necessary steps to correct our behaviour and establish a path to restore faith and trust in the online creator space. So, going forward from today, we will NOT be using AI across ANY projects developed by KHM.
This has not been an easy decision to make. We wanted to believe that the technology could be a force for good. That belief became increasingly wrong, and we apologise unreservedly.
We won't be using the AI to replace any jobs. Our company is still small, as is our output.
But we believe that humanity and morality are higher priorities for us than using the technology to help us progress.
We are only a small non-profit enterprise. But we value the audience we seek to build and the creators who may choose to work with us in the past, presently, and hopefully in the future.
We intend and will endeavour to hire artists when we can afford to do so. As with our previous statement, our policy will be that their art will be commissioned by the company, and the artist will retain full rights to and earn royalties from their work.
A lease will be in place for KHM to allow us to display the artwork.
AI is here; it's not going away. In fact, it has been and will probably continue to be integrated more into daily life. But we have joined in solidarity with the growing anti-AI movement. This is an incredibly serious and rapidly developing situation that if some experts are correct in predicting, could spell trouble for the likes of which humanity has never seen nor is prepared for.
We stand by and will continue to champion aims to make the necessary legislative changes to ensure AI remains ethical, that companies investing in data centres are responsible for funding it themselves (without a single penny from the taxpayer) ,investing in the resources needed for cooling, and that the artists whose work has been bastardised and stolen be fairly and justly compensated.
Finally, we would like to ask a favour.
