A Bit About Lydia

JThe younger daughter of Eric and Patricia Ramsey, Lydia was born in Hackney, London, and comes from a third-generation Nigerian family through her grandparents.

Lydia spent the first ten years of her life in Hackney alongside her older sister, Erica. Her mother's tragic death during a mugging dramatically changed her childhood. Following her mother's death, Lydia's father decided that the family needed a fresh start. He moved Lydia and Erica out of London and relocated them to Stratford-upon-Avon, where he established a food truck to support the family.

After her eleventh birthday, Lydia began attending Stratford High School. It was there that she met Ryan Foster. The two quickly became best friends and remained virtually inseparable throughout their school years. Ryan and Lydia told each other everything, and Ryan was the first person Lydia came out to as a lesbian when she was fourteen. When Bradley Callaghan bullied Ryan, it put their friendship to the test.

One day at school, Ryan was building up the courage to ask out his crush, Gemma Chapman, when Bradley deliberately cracked an egg over his head in front of the entire school. Lydia immediately walked over to confront him. When Bradley responded by calling Lydia a homophobic slur, she punched him. Bradley never bothered either Ryan or Lydia again. Lydia's loyalty to Ryan has remained one of the defining features of their friendship. She is fiercely protective of the people she loves and has never been afraid to stand up for them.

Outside of school, Lydia spent much of her time helping her father with his food truck. Eric was an exceptional cook who could seemingly prepare anything, and he passed his knowledge on to Lydia. Over the years, Lydia became an extremely capable cook herself, eventually becoming so invested in the family business that she occasionally skipped school to help her father. For Lydia, cooking became more than a skill. It became a connection to her father, her family and the life they had built together.

Unfortunately, the food truck eventually had to be sold, leaving both Lydia and Eric without work. With no obvious next step, Lydia turned to the person she knew would help. Ryan. She contacted her best friend to ask whether Reds Coffee & Diner had any work available. That decision brings Lydia into the Reds family and puts her directly into the orbit of Chaz Harrison. The two immediately recognise their shared passion for cooking, but their personalities and approaches to the kitchen frequently put them at odds.

Chaz sees himself as the experienced professional, while Lydia is determined to prove that she can hold her own despite being younger and less formally trained. Their rivalry gradually develops into a mutual respect, making Lydia one of Chaz's most important foils throughout the series. Outside of work, Lydia is a passionate pop-punk fan, with bands such as A Day to Remember and Green Day among her favourites.

Casting

Bukky Bakray would be the first choice for Lydia Ramsey if they adapted Order Up! for television.

Bakray won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2021 following her acclaimed performance in Rocks, where she demonstrated a naturalistic and emotionally grounded style of acting that would be perfect for Lydia. Lydia needs to feel like a real person rather than a collection of character traits. She is funny, fiercely loyal, occasionally impulsive and extremely passionate about cooking, but her confidence also hides the grief and upheaval she experienced during childhood.

Bakray has already demonstrated an ability to communicate that kind of emotional complexity without overplaying it. Her London upbringing and Nigerian heritage would also give her a natural connection to Lydia's background and help ground the character in the world of Order Up!.

Bakray is an actress who deserves a role that allows her to step back into the spotlight, and Lydia could provide exactly that opportunity. After being so impressed by her performance in Rocks, this would be a chance to see Bakray bring that same naturalism to a long-running television character — while giving her room to explore comedy, friendship, rivalry and drama.

Lydia Ramsey could be the role that reminds audiences why Bukky Bakray was recognised as one of Britain's most promising young performers in the first place.
